Our story

Why this exists.

Clear Pathways was founded by Stephen Bell, drawing on lived experience of the criminal justice sector and a clear view of what was missing locally.

The pattern was familiar: people with real potential falling through gaps: in the justice system, in schools, in services that meant well but never quite met people where they were. Support existed, but often not here, not consistently, and not from anyone who felt credible to the people who needed it.

The organisation was set up to close that gap. Practical guidance, relatable support, and a genuine route forward for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

What that looks like in practice is deliberately unglamorous. Small groups, so nobody disappears into the back of a room. A fixed structure, because good intentions on their own change very little. Health and fitness at the centre, because when someone starts sleeping properly and moving regularly, everything else becomes possible.

And people delivering it who don’t flinch at somebody’s history. That matters more than it should have to. A lot of people arriving here have learned to expect a certain look when they explain where they’ve been. They don’t get it from us.

We’re not here to fix anyone. Most people don’t need fixing. They need a route, and someone willing to walk it with them for long enough that it holds.
